The Public Works department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of 37 miles of gas mains and serves 1,667 customers. The department is dedicated to gas system safety.
Natural gas is delivered to the city’s main gate station at a pressure of approximately 900 p.s.i. The pressure is reduced to approximately 160 p.s.i. and odorant is added for safety purposes. The gas is transported to the city’s two other “border” stations where the pressure is reduced to 20 p.s.i. or less. The gas is then distributed through a system of mains ranging in size from 2 inches to 4 inches in diameter and is delivered to homes and business at pressures from 4 oz. to several pounds.
If you detect a gas odor anywhere, please call the City Utility Office at (217) 438-6151 during working hours or the Auburn Police Department at (217) 438-3351 after hours, weekends, or holidays.
