The Public Works Department employs 7 full time personnel and is responsible for development and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure. This includes design and construction of:
- public streets (including sidewalks, street and pavement markings);
- the water system (including storage and distribution);
- the sewer and storm drain systems (including collection, pumping and treatment of sewage); and,
- the natural gas system.
Public Works also provides review and inspection of public improvements for new development projects and for public capital improvement and replacement projects

Public Water Supply
The goal of the Water Department is to supply the citizens of Auburn with the highest quality drinking water with as few service interruptions as possible.
The city purchases water from Otter Lake Water Commission and provides water distribution for 1,905 customers. On average the city uses 280,000 gallons of water per day. The city also maintains a 300,000 gallon elevated storage tank.
Water System Improvement Project
The City of Auburn Water Pollution Control Facility is located on 23.16 acres at 13790 Jodi Road. The treatment plant process consists of head works with bar screens and grit removal followed by two aerated lagoons operated in series with rock filtration.
The facility operates under the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit # IL0022403 and has a designed average flow of 0.62 million gallons per day (mgd).
The Natural Gas Department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of 52 miles of gas mains and serves 1,693 customers. The department is dedicated to gas system safety.

The public works department is responsible for maintaining, cleaning, and repairing streets, city right-of-way, replacing and repairing all signs in the right of way and performing snow removal on all city streets.
